| on the 7 February 2008, a study released by Environmental Defense found that 90% of the plastic baby bottles sold in Canada leach the chemical Bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is known as a hormone disruptor and is associated with adverse health effects such as early onset of puberty in girls, breast cancer, prostate cancer, ADHD and obesity.
The Chemical BPA. is used to make baby plastic bottles clear, rigid and shatter proof, and does not serve any other |

| purpose. The test involved heating nine different polycarbonate baby bottles from 3 major manufacturers, and found that BPA was leached to levels of 5-8ng/ml. Studies have shown that levels below this leaching level can be harmful.
The Canada study looked at the manufacturers Gerber, Avent and Playtex, with Avent had the highest level of leaching; Similiarly tests were conducted in the US on baby bottles from the manufacturers; Avent, Dr. Brown, Evenflo and Disney. The Test results were similiar to that in Canada with Dr Brown bottles showing the highest concentration of bisphenol A after the bottles were heated. “16 April 2008″, The nytimes reports that the Canadian Government is ready to ban BPA being used in plastic baby bottles, as well as food and beverage containers as well as lining in food cans. It was expected that a ‘.. public announcement by Health Canada may come as early as Wednesday but could be delayed until the end of May. Canada would be the first country to make a health finding against B.P.A., which has been shown to disrupt the hormonal systems of animals. The department’s decision was first reported in The Globe and Mail, a Toronto newspaper, on Tuesday.’ reports the nytimes. Suggested advice for Parents and caregivers are that:
More advice is available at the Chemical substances website A FAQ on unsafe Baby bottles and Bisphenol A (BPA) is available from the Chemical Substances website Personally I would not be using these bottles as what parent would like to take a risk (no matter how small) of harming their child/children in 5 yrs, 10 years or even 40 yrs time to suffer from prostate cancer, breast cancer, ADHD, or even the early onset of puberty for girls. The risk is too great no matter how small and when you consider that there are alternatives available such as glass bottles and even better is breast feeding.. The latter helping to stimulate the immune system of the child, as well as promoting a closer bond to the mother. The Fact remains that even the canadian study is old news, as the www.news-medical.net published on the 5 December 2005 the article titled “Bisphenol A (BPA) has been linked to damage in developing brain tissue” found that BPA disrupts important effects of estrogen in the developing brain. quoting from the article BPA is known to ‘..act as an artificial estrogen, the primary hormone involved in female sexual development, BPA has already been shown to increase breast cancer cell growth, and in the January 2005 edition of the journal Cancer Research, another UC research team reported that it increased the growth of some prostate cancer cells as well….’ How can we continue to ignore this; and Why has the Australian Government not taken a stand to protect our children. Surely Corporate growth is not more important than the health of our children and the future leaders of Australia…Surely the Minister for Health and Ageing “Hon Nicola Roxon” would agree that the health of our children is vitally important.. The US FDA just announced this week that they believe BPA is safe.
Maybe everyone overreacted?
I hate to think of all the thousands of Lexan bottles thrown in landfill sites….they are virtually indestructable.
